Sharing chat screenshots without oversharing: Redact privacy scenarios

zeroNet Redact helps prepare photos, PDFs and videos for sharing with private details covered or redacted. It suits selective sharing with a partner, friend or colleague. These are illustrative examples, not customer testimonials; it does not control access to the original app.

Show your partner a chat screenshot while protecting a third person's details

You want to share part of a conversation with your girlfriend, boyfriend or partner without exposing another person's phone number, address or unrelated messages.

A practical workflow

Work on a copy of the screenshot. Review local text detection, add manual solid covers for details you do not want to share, and inspect the exported image. Make it clear that the screenshot has been redacted and preserve the meaning of the conversation.

What this does not cover

Redact does not block access to the original chat or erase it from the messaging app. It cannot guarantee every detail is detected. A selectively shared image is not evidence that no other messages exist.

Send a receipt or PDF without exposing an address

You need to share a purchase or document with someone, but your address, account number or other personal details are irrelevant.

A practical workflow

Review every page, mark the sensitive regions and export a redacted copy. Reopen it and check visually and through search, selection and copying. The PDF implementation removes covered text, but broader document cleanup has limits.

What this does not cover

Do not claim all attachments, vector artwork or hidden objects are sanitized. Keep the original separate and verify the specific output you intend to send.

Share a video while covering someone else's face

A clip includes a person who should not be identifiable in the version you share.

A practical workflow

Review automatic face detections and the whole timeline. Manual regions have a fixed position and chosen active time; use them with that limitation in mind. Watch the complete exported clip for missed frames and identifying details.

What this does not cover

Movement and sampled detection can leave gaps. Covering a face does not remove identity clues in speech, clothing or surroundings, and Redact should not be assumed to remove audio.

Questions before you choose

Can Redact stop my partner opening my chats?

No. It prepares copies for sharing; it is not an app lock. Lockstead addresses selected-app restrictions, while Space addresses local encrypted file storage.

Can I redact a screenshot before sending it to my partner?

Yes. Review the image, cover private details and inspect the export. Clearly identify it as redacted so selective disclosure does not misrepresent the original.

Are automatic suggestions enough?

No. Review suggestions, add missed regions and inspect the exported image, every PDF page or the entire video.
